Virtual Reality & 3D CAD Modeling
Did you ever try to imagine what the future of drafting & 3D CAD modeling will be like? Have a think about the emerging technologies you see around us such as virtual and augmented reality. Here is a good explanation of the two if you are unfamiliar.
I see the future CAD drafting office looking like the Christmas party has come early and everyone is badly attempting a horrible version of Macarena. Although it may look like a bunch of crazy people waving their arms, in a different world they will be creating the same 3d CAD models it takes us using a screen and mouse today.
Although I do think it would take some getting used to I feel once you would have the hang of it the possibilities would be endless. Just imagine the endless space, reaching out and grabbing the 3d part and rotating with your hand to manipulate it so you could get a more in depth look at the design.
We are seeing the very early stages of these technologies emerge using augmented reality that requires a smart device of some sort but soon you will be wearing VR, holding a 3D CAD model assembly, picking it apart piece by piece. One of the great benefits of collaborating with others in the virtual world is that you don’t even need to be in the same country to be standing side by side with your client inspecting the model. Your assembly team can virtually assemble the product first prior to fabrication to make sure everything fits. The possibility’s and benefits are literally endless.
To give you a taste of what the future might look like for a draftsman or modeler of the future have a look at the links at the bottom.
I would love to hear anyone else’s opinion regarding this topic, and if any one has started implementing this technology.
